Find countries and universities that recognize the IB

Last updated:

Each year, over 4,500 universities in more than 110 countries/territories receive IB students’ transcripts.

IB graduates enter university with a firm foundation for their degree programme—not just academically, but with their unique and refined IB learner profile attributes—and contribute to their universities’ academic standing and internationalization strategies.

Universities and governments around the world widely recognize the Diploma Programme (DP), and recognition of the Career-related Programme (CP), DP courses and the Middle Years Programme (MYP) is steadily growing.

Visit the Recognition Statements Database

The IB’s Recognition Statements Database contains recognition statements for countries/territories, states and provinces (in the USA and Canada, respectively), and universities around the globe. Find countries and universities that recognize the IB now.

Tailor your search

You can search the database by country/territory policy, university policy, and credit/advanced standing policy.

  • The country/territory function allows you to view a selection of countries, states and provinces that recognize the IB and are popular destinations for IB students. The database currently includes more than 140 countries.
  • The university function allows you to view individual universities and institutions of higher education that recognize the IB. There are more than 2,000 universities on the database—covering over 90% of institutions where IB students send their transcripts—and more universities are added every month.
    • Universities can create and edit their own statements. You can see what each university has set as their admissions criteria regarding IB programmes, courses, grades and subjects, depending on what information each individual institute has added.
    • If a university is not yet on the database, we recommend that you consult their website directly for their IB recognition policy. It does not necessarily mean they do not recognize the IB.
  • The credit/advanced standing function allows you to view how universities in the United States recognize individual IB standard level (SL) and higher level (HL) subjects for university credit or advanced standing. You can search by subject and level. Find credit/advanced standing policies for about 800 universities, covering more than 80% of institutions in the USA where IB students send their transcripts. More than half grant credit for both SL and HL subjects.

University policies are subject to change, and additional restrictions and requirements may apply. You should always check with universities directly for the most up-to-date and complete information. If you see any inaccuracies, or if you are aware of a university which mentions the IB on their website, but is not on the database, please contact [email protected].

Transcript numbers reflect requests received by the IB to send transcripts to a particular university; these are not necessarily an indication of the number of IB students enrolled at that university.
